So is it just the number of people in the Facebook group that people are using to make this assumption? Maybe I'm just being hopeful, but I definitely remember them saying that most are accepted in March, especially for those of us who interviewed December-February. I know people keep referring to the SDN thread from last year and how very few people reported being accepted in March, but I think there's a high likelihood that there are not as many people actually reporting to SDN that they've been accepted than y'all are suggesting.

I looked through the entire thread for the last cycle and there were only 21 reported acceptances between October 15th and March 15th. Doesn't this suggest that SDN isn't the most accurate representation of how many people are hearing back? It's true, proportionally few of those reports were made in March, only 2 or 3 if I remember correctly, but there may be hope for more of us than we think.

Yes I'm accepted lol currently trying to decide between the U and 2 other places right now. Was hoping to use this tool to help.

I want to have hope too. Realistically though, let's say the FB page still has 70 members. A couple of those are admin, but also there will be a handful of people that got accepted and don't have Facebook. They haven't sent post-II Rs or WLs (besides for early decision people) which means about 400 of us are waiting for 40 spots. Another 40 will get the WL and maybe 20 of those will also get the A when other people give up their spot... Still, most of us are going to get rejected come March.

^^This. Also, I would wager it is incredibly unlikely that there are 40 spots remaining. Not everyone uses Facebook, not everyone joins the group, etc. There are probably a good 20-30 accepted people who are not in the group, leaving maybe 10-20 spots left at best. I think that's a more accurate assumption.

Absolutely true, at this point optimism is dangerous because statistics say we're basically all getting trashed 🙁

I got WL at a DO school after completely bombing the interview. I brushed up my interview skills and managed an acceptance at the U And one other MD school so don’t assume that getting dumped by a DO automatically means you'll get rejected from an MD.

Then yeah you definitely don’t want to come here. 😉 You all can be pessimistic but I think I’m very next on their list and when this guy bails my dreams are coming true! 😆 Maybe it’s because they interviewed me when I didn’t think they would, but I am totally positive and sending you guys all the good vibes too.

You guys are probably right, but I think we may have more hope that the Facebook group seems to imply. There may be more 1st/2nd year students who make up part of the group (that's how it is at other school Facebook groups I've seen). Also, if there are 90 acceptances given out so far (70 from the Facebook group and an extra 20 who aren't on the group), there could still be 60 acceptances to be given out, including waitlisters. They accept more than their class size, this document says they accept 150. I don't know, I've just never been one to willingly take a pessimistic outlook. But then again, having a couple of acceptances already has helped dim my prior neuroticism. I wish we all could get in!
 
Yes interviewed at a DO school but got rejected. It's hard for me to be very optimistic about the U thinking that I didn't even get an acceptance at a less competitive school

Being accepted definitely helps! I have 1 A to DO school that I've been very excited about, I think my neuroticism is mostly coming from my family and friends though. When I got accepted elsewhere everyone was like "Oh. Well when do you hear from the U?" and I get immediately shut down if I imply I probably won't get in (seriously, they tell me I have low self esteem and that I'm smart and I have some nonexistent advantage that will ensure my acceptance) even though my chances are literally less than 10% at this point. I know they all love me but it kind of made my other acceptance feel really flaccid and they'll be destroyed when I get the R.

Yikes, this makes me very appreciative of my family's general silence regarding the application process lol! It helps that I got a bunch of rejections and didn't get in last year, after they were pretty similar in that regard.

Be freaking pumped about that acceptance. You're going TO BE A DOCTOR!! That is all that matters.

You make a lot of really valid points here. I'm definitely being more pessimistic and neurotic than I should be, especially with an acceptance in the bag. Let's hold out hope. 🙂

It's so funny how family and friends outside of medicine don't seem to understand how competitive it is! I'm sorry about that! I totally feel you there with the family stuff. My family innocently did the same thing and couldn't believe it when I got rejected pre-II to my state school that I statistically should have been a shoo-in for an II. At least we understand each other! 😆

Thanks so much, I need to channel this enthusiasm because it's going to be awesome! Just get through March and mourn with my family before they can be excited for me too. I'm sorry about your last cycle, it's a random crapshoot and it's sick as hell that you're in for 2024!

Right? It hurts the ego so bad but it's incredibly biased and we're still great applicants. Nobody understands the insane anxiety and insecurity mixed with elation and triumph like y'all do and I'm so grateful to have people to talk with
 
Wife keeps telling me that I am just being pessimistic, but I really doubt I got in if I havent heard back yet. Interviewed on Jan 6. They say there are acceptances in March, but I dont think it will happen for me. I left the interview feeling real confident too.

From a purely logical standpoint you are probably looking at a waitlist or R. Doesn’t mean there isn’t a shot though!

They said that they probably wont get back to us until March due to how late in the cycle it is, but it sounds like others interviewed after me have already heard back. Are you still waiting to hear back too?

If it makes you feel better I interviewed in September and haven’t heard anything. At my interview Dr. Chan said expect to hear back, at the earliest, 6 weeks after your interview date. You’re barely at that mark!! I wouldn’t be too worried yet..

Hang in there. I don't know you, your application, or how well you interviewed. For all we know you're the next to be accepted. I am getting the vibe based on the current state around here and what was said at recent interviews that nobody will be hearing anything until March. We're all in this together my friend!

Don't lose hope! It took 7 weeks for me to hear back, so it hasn't been too long yet! Give it another week!
 
Hey everyone but I just wanted to drop another line as a current MS1 and just say don't give up hope!!!!! Whether you get the acceptance or not does not determine any about you intrinsically. I am a non-trad student at 31 yo and it took me 2 years to get in. I understand the anxiety you all feel right now and know that if you still believe in yourself, regardless of the acceptance or rejection, you can still accomplish whatever you want. May not be this year but get constructive (and more importantly, BLATANTLY HONEST) feedback and improve your application. Be true to who you are and don't allow circumstance to determine your passions. This is sappy, so forgive me but it is around this time in the year that these message boards become incredibly neurotic, as many of us are, and remarkably defeatist. You are all amazing people and are capable of anything! I hope to see as many of you as possible in the fall!

Thanks for the pep talk, man. Can you speak to the proportion of people who got in in March vs earlier than that? I know a lot of us are past the glory zone and are feeling as though March holds a WL at best.

From what I have gathered there were more acceptances than not by March last year. There were still several acceptances but their claims of heavy March acceptances have not been indicative of reality. As classmates, we don't compare anything from undergrad or our acceptance experiences so I don't have a super good feel on how that was for many people but the Facebook group that I was a part of right when it opened, was indicative that there was just around 80-90 acceptances if not slightly more by March last year if my memory serves me correctly.
 
I think what we're all forgetting is that based purely on statistics, even if you got an interview, you're still most likely going to get rejected. That's just how it works. But like AdductorMagnus said earlier, even if they've already sent out 100 acceptances, that doesn't necessarily mean there's only 25 acceptance left. They very well could send out 30-50 more acceptances depending on how many other people commit elsewhere. The best thing we can do is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Otherwise, we'll just drive ourselves insane with anxiety. Obviously I really want to get in as well, but in the meantime, I'm working on updating my PS and application so that I'm ready to resubmit it ASAP this summer if I have to.

Lol no, but choose UW 100% haha. I bet you can find some threads in the X vs Y school forum on either school to kind of compare. I couldn't find one specifically comparing the two schools, but you can post one yourself so that it's specific to your goals.

Aside from the obvious differences between living in the rural town of Moscow and the arguably much more cosmopolitan SLC, the missions of these programs are very different.

WWAMI's purpose is to identify, select, and train doctors for primary care, with a priority on rural medicine. Many students spend 3rd and 4th years in their home state doing clinical rotations. This is intended to foster connection locally. 75% of Idaho WWAMI students eventually practice in Idaho, for example. Many students, if not most, match to residencies in Idaho. If that's your goal, pick WWAMI.

Utah SoM offers a much less single-focused path: students are completely free to explore all specialties, including but not limited to rural primary care. The hospital system serves a huge region of the west, and has depth across many fields, with on-going research: oncology, burn care, reproductive medicine, pediatrics; really, anything you can name. UW Med's complete resident match list is published, but I can't find the subset of WWAMI students. That would be very interesting to compare. This quote is from a 2017 article on UW's website: "Of the 217 UW participants in the Match this year, 32 percent matched into residencies in WWAMI, and 50 percent matched into primary-care residencies."

What's your goal? Primary care with deep connection into your home state or exploring specialties and wider opportunities to match outside of the west in a broader range of programs?

The scholarship office told all of us at their workshop for incoming medical students that financial aid packages won't go out till April 1st, in accordance with UofU guidelines. If you want to back up your claim, post a screenshot.

These are good points, and it is certainly true that one of UW's main goals is to produce primary care physicians for the region. This is a mission they are very up front with, and are ranked number 2 in primary care training nationally.

However, I think it is important to emphasize that UW also ranks number 12 in research, receiving the most research dollars from the federal government of any public institution, and has an impressive match list for student's across the WWAMI region to back it up. The reason that there are a higher percentage of student's matched into primary care for UW has nothing to do with a lack of opportunity to match into your desired specialty.

You can hear about scholarships before you get your entire aid package. There's no need to be rude to one another.

I don't have the data on where WWAMI students match (I wish I did!!) Are you saying UW med places students nationally in residency in all specialties? That, I agree with. But I would bet the WWAMI cohort is heavily skewed toward primary care in residencies in WWAMI states.

And AvgIdaho, if you've been admitted to both, you would be in a great position to ask that question of the WWAMI director before you make your decision.

It’s called the Ballard scholarship, I didn’t apply for it. It is most definitely not a lie hahaha. Got the email straight from Dr Chan. I understand your confusion though—I think your misunderstanding is in the scholarships that go out with an application, which don’t come until later. Again, I didn’t apply for this.

Hey. I guess I came across as rude. My apologies. I was legitimately concerned that someone was trying to make things up on the forum to stress out other students, which would be horrible. We can't always trust anonymous strangers. I guess the misunderstanding was mine. So... Congratulations! That is the kind of news that everyone wants to hear. I'm happy for you. Hopefully, you can forgive my assertive denial.
