2019-2020 Washington University in St. Louis

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So even if March 15th comes and all are waitlisted, we know for a fact this new curriculum has people scared. If you had acceptances at multiple top 10 schools, in the final analysis, some will be afraid of an unknown risk at Wash U, and open up new slots for us. Assuming A calls are done, it only means they chose the conservative route of relying on Wait Lists rather than making more than the average number of offers upfront. Hope remains!

Does Wash U tell us where we are on the Wait List? Tier 1, 2, 3, etc. or rank?

Does no one have the link to the fb for new incoming class so I can look up how many people are on it?

Isn't that lower than last year's #s apparently by mid-March? Earlier in the thread they said there were 270-300 people in the group by Mid-March.

It is significantly lower, yes.
Source: was the person who reported those numbers, last year's thread, etc

Anyone know if WASHU rejects post interview or do they just WL everyone
I heard thru SDN everyone gets waitlisted on 3/15. I prefer a firm answer and not be held in suspense all summer. Hope if they WL us all they at least tell us roughly where we are in the queue.

Is this a school that will reject post II, or do they WL everyone?

As per their email, we will know A/WL/R by 3/15

"We have completed our interviewing for the Entering Class of 2020. The Committee on Admissions hopes to complete our decisions about initial acceptance offers, shortly. By March 15th, everyone will receive an admissions decision. The decisions are accept, wait-listed and not accept. "

anyone know if u get WL here, and if they accept u after april 30 do u get ur financial aid letter with the A or do u have to accept the A blind?

Even if you have to accept the A blind, it's not a commitment. Is that what you're wondering?
No I mean if they tell you you are accepted AAMC rules say u have like 5 days to decline ur old offer or the new one. But will u know ur financial aid offer from the school u got off the WL before those 5 days?

That might only be if you hit "commit to enroll". Some places let you stay on "plan to enroll" until July

I see now. From AAMC:
"After April 30:
  1. Permit all applicants:
    1. A minimum of five business days to respond to an acceptance offer. This may be reduced to a minimum of two business days within 30 days of the start of orientation.
    2. To submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.
  2. Recognize and respect the challenges of applicants with multiple acceptance offers, applicants who have not yet received an acceptance offer, and applicants who have not yet been informed about financial aid opportunities at schools to which they have been accepted."
and
"The AAMC understands that an individual’s circumstances (e.g., delays in receiving financial aid offer or other compelling personal reasons) may warrant exception from one or more of the following protocols, and defers to each school’s judgment in such cases."

Here's my interpretation:
We should anticipate receiving a fin aid offer before we need to make a final decision. If that does not occur, you would be in contact with WashU and request an extension to decide after April 30. This is why we submit FAFSA to schools ahead of an A, and if we are WL, they will send instructions encouraging us to fill out CSS when required.

Can you link to where you found this?

So has there been any post II rejections? Are they just going to waitlist everyone on the 15th?

Doesn’t make sense why WashU maintains its practice of waiting a week to give Rs/WLs. Gives many applicants who traveled at large expenses to Missouri several days of dread knowing what’s coming.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the application cycle, it’s that schools don’t care what’s best for applicants

Would you be willing to expand on this? What makes it unique?
Kind of depends where you are coming from... I think if you’re from a major city it’s a a big culture shock (it really is “the Midwest“ vibe, it has some city-like aspects, but it can also feel very much like a small town). It’s also in Missouri obviously and although St Louis is pretty liberal, Missouri is verrrrrry conservative. Just as an example *the only* abortion clinic in the state is in St Louis and it is currently being lobbied to shut down. That’s a pretty big deal to me. Missouri could lose its last abortion clinic. Its fate will be decided this week.

On the other hand if you’re used to a small town it can feel pretty overwhelming... like I mentioned before although CWE is “safer” there are routine robberies of students (I’d say 3-4 every 2 weeks). I can list incident reports we got last week if you’d like an example. I live a ~15 min walk away from campus and there are definitely certain streets I don’t feel comfortable walking on, especially at night. In general neighborhoods are very “spotty”... one minute you’re by a Whole Foods with a bunch of hipsters and the next you’re in a neighborhood where people are on food stamps and are living in houses that are literally falling apart. It’s routinely rated as one of the most dangerous cities in America, and although those statistics require a lot of context, it is just the truth. I would encourage you to look up the history of St Louis to really understand the disparity that exists in the city. It’s pretty depressing, but soooo important if you’re considering moving here.

There are pros and cons! I personally like the city, but I do feel think WashU downplays things, so I think it’s important to really think about these things when making your decision and do your research. I don’t want to scare people, but I think it’s a harder decision to move to STL than choosing to move to Cali for instance... Obviously this is my personal opinion, and for the record I’m originally from the west coast and I would consider myself a moderate-liberal...

Plz don’t hate on me 🙂

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the application cycle, it’s that schools don’t care what’s best for applicants
Yet many applicants still buy into the idea that schools do in fact care for applicants and have their best interests in mind, or even go as far as saying schools are actively trying to do what is best for applicants. Unfortunately

Yeah, the bulletins I said we get weekly and that I’d be willing to post are all about students and staff.
For example...

PROTECTIVE SERVICES' NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY SUMMARY NO. 91

Hello School of Medicine Students,

Two robberies and one aggravated assault were reported during the last week to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) in the six neighborhoods we monitor near the School of Medicine campus. The SLMPD is investigating these incidents.

Two subjects approached the students displaying handguns and demanded the students’ property. The students gave the subjects their cell phones, wallets, and car keys. One of the subjects then struck one of the students in the face, knocking him to the ground. Both subjects entered the student’s vehicle and drove off, heading west on Pershing Ave. One student reported minor injuries. The SLMPD is investigating the incident.
