Your kid is a traditional student and I will eat my hat if she qualifies as financially independent.
If you don't qualify for FA, you pay. If you qualify for FA, what used to be given to you in loans will now be scholarships that you don't have to pay back. If you are supported by your parents who have incomes over minimum, you still have to pay.
Also, many other schools already do this. It is not new, and is not the same as what NYU does, which is no charge for tuition for all students. Yale and others offer loan-free or mostly-loan-free Financial aid.
This is true. I'm pretty sure that about half of the student body at Cornell won't even be affected by this new program. Of course, this is great news for those who demonstrate significant financial need (which isn't close to everyone).

Yes that is their standard response email to an ITA. I received the same and someone else reported this same language earlier in the thread.

Harvard does NOT have debt-free tuition, they have a base unit loan per year that everyone is required to borrow (unless you can pay the whole tuition without the loan obviously). Columbia is debt-free, and as far as I know, haven’t heard of any other med schools doing completely debt-free tuition. I’ve heard Mt. Sinai caps maximum 4-year loans at $75k at least for some people and NYU is tuition-free for everyone regardless of financial status, but school-wide debt-free policies isn’t something that has started to catch on until recently.
Tuition free and debt free or not the same thing right? Base unit loan accounts for living costs which is what people are borrowing for while the tuition is given for those who can not afford it. However, debt free implies that you would not borrow any money for the entire 4 years assuming you are deemed needy enough. Is NYC covering living costs for some people on top of free tuition?

Also waiting for a response for my ITA email. It seems like Cornell is taking their time with reviewing apps so maybe sit tight a little longer if possible. Or I would book a refundable ticket or at least one where you can get credit if you cancel

Schools don't check pre-reqs until before matriculation. I would call them and see what they say.
