2019-2020 Weill Cornell

How do students show independence such that they successfully exclude parent FAFSA-Calculated /required contributions ?
I’ve heard various levels of student income level required and varied look back periods.

LOLLLLLLLL
Good one, sir.
@proudofmykids is trying to skirt the system. But really should be consulting his financial advisor not premeds on sdn 😉

Could anyone clear this up for me: in all the press I’ve been reading they say “anyone who qualifies for FA will receive a full ride”. Does that mean it’s a binary system and you either qualify and get the full ride or not, or is it what people were speculating before where they pay the rest of what your bill is after calculating your estimated family contribution?

If you don't qualify for FA, you pay. If you qualify for FA, what used to be given to you in loans will now be scholarships that you don't have to pay back. If you are supported by your parents who have incomes over minimum, you still have to pay.

Also, many other schools already do this. It is not new, and is not the same as what NYU does, which is no charge for tuition for all students. Yale and others offer loan-free or mostly-loan-free Financial aid.

This is true. I'm pretty sure that about half of the student body at Cornell won't even be affected by this new program. Of course, this is great news for those who demonstrate significant financial need (which isn't close to everyone).

Your kid is a traditional student and I will eat my hat if she qualifies as financially independent.

Try learning something new, you might save some significant money.
There are known metrics and definitions for independence from parent contributions that apply to traditional and non traditional applicants, even married applicants might be judged non-independent.
I have read of various look back periods, income qualifications, requirements and levels etc.
Understanding them, might enable better planning whether for MS1,2,3 or 4; each year of qualification being worth about $90K at Weill with NYC cost of living.

But hey, feel free to scroll past and ignore the info.

It’s the latter. But unfortunately as others indicate, family contribution is often far from reality for individual families.

Ok. No need to be snarky. I am a non traditional student and will probably qualify as financially independent. I highly doubt your daughter will. But good luck.

I'm sorry if you get some heat on here for whatever reason, but no need to be caustic. It goes both ways, you can also scroll past and ignore people.

UPDATE:
Here is the exact reference link for how Cornell Weill handles need-calculations and parent-income-reporting requirements for any Cornell grant considerations. See bottom of page 7 as quick reference.

SPOILER:
EVEN IF YOU ARE MARRIED WITH KIDS, unless you are **40** years of age, you will need to report parent income for consideration of grants coming from Cornell to meet expenses beyond EFC. They imply they will use the standard federal determination for EFC (estimated family contribution).

Didn’t apply to Cornell but thinking about tossing my hat in now. Pretty certain I’d qualify considering I grew up under a single parent household living barely above minimum wage. Just concerned that it’ll be a waste of 40 given how late it is in the cycle 🙁 it’s an investment I suppose

I looked but couldn’t find any info on what to do if you live in a single parent household. Is there a process for verifying this so that you can just submit one parents tax returns?

For those of you who sent an ITA email. Did you get a response saying that they’ve received the letter and will add to you file. Along with a statement of how the process is long and they’ll try there best. Idk if I’m reading too far into this email but it seems like they’re saying “you’ve already been reviewed and haven’t been selected.”

They aren’t rolling admissions. Submit ASAP.

It says in separate situations, report the parent who you lived with most.

Yes that is their standard response email to an ITA. I received the same and someone else reported this same language earlier in the thread.

Actually 140 including secondary fee. But if money isn't an issue I say go for it, they're non-rolling

One of my interviewers gave me his email, the other did not. So he got a thank you email, the other did not. I personally think it would’ve been weird to go digging for the other persons email if he didn’t offer it
Same here

What other schools have debt-free tuition? I know Harvard and Columbia do as well
Harvard does NOT have debt-free tuition, they have a base unit loan per year that everyone is required to borrow (unless you can pay the whole tuition without the loan obviously). Columbia is debt-free, and as far as I know, haven’t heard of any other med schools doing completely debt-free tuition. I’ve heard Mt. Sinai caps maximum 4-year loans at $75k at least for some people and NYU is tuition-free for everyone regardless of financial status, but school-wide debt-free policies isn’t something that has started to catch on until recently.

Tuition free and debt free or not the same thing right? Base unit loan accounts for living costs which is what people are borrowing for while the tuition is given for those who can not afford it. However, debt free implies that you would not borrow any money for the entire 4 years assuming you are deemed needy enough. Is NYC covering living costs for some people on top of free tuition?

Yeah tuition free=/=debt free

I don’t know about NYU because I don’t go there sorry lol, a current student there or the office of financial aid could probably answer your question better

Debt-free
Cost of Attendance (Tuition + Living Expense etc) - Expected Family Contribution = Total Need-Based Award
Normally, Cornell gives need-based aid with ~28K unit loan and the remainder covered by grants
With debt-free now your entire need-based award will be covered with grants, no unit loan.

Cornell won't take my Gen Chem 1 AP credit so I can't 😡😡😡😡
Srsly? Yah, NVM. I was thinking about it...but nah.

On the other hand...would they take quant as a substitute...?

Nah, keep your cool. You are already $8000 in the hole. No more. *calm thoughts of panic*

I’m FAP, unless they don’t provide a fee waiver. But the fact that I’m FAP means money IS an issue and even 40 is hard to swallow

Do they require you to take all the required classes by time of applying or matriculation. I am taking a philosophy class this semester for their humanities req

Their prereq deadline is January 31 AKA you need them all done by the end of this fall, so you’re good

Does anyone know what the likelihood is of getting a requested interview date? I requested an upcoming date and need to schedule a flight but they haven’t gotten back to me for a couple of days now... looking at $400+ tickets at this point

Also waiting for a response for my ITA email. It seems like Cornell is taking their time with reviewing apps so maybe sit tight a little longer if possible. Or I would book a refundable ticket or at least one where you can get credit if you cancel

Ended up getting the date I requested. For those who already interviewed, when did the p.m. session run until? The email says at latest 6 PM but that seems really late and I have a 6:30PM flight to catch...

Congrats! That is a really small window especially cause all of nyc airports are out of the way. How long did it take between your ITA email and ii?

I would reschedule that flight. Even if the day ends around 4pm, you'd be iffy catching that flight given traffic to the airports

Y'all are right. I re-scheduled the flight for the next morning. Probably saved me a missed flight and a load of headache. And it was not from an ITA, I meant I got the date I requested in my response to the original II!

How does Cornell calculate expected family contribution? Also, how are you liking Cornell so far?
Hi friend stop trolling l0l

But also join us Cornell is the best

wait what? I also used AP credit for Gen Chem 1 oh no! I'm confused because their website says it can be fulfilled by "advanced science coursework" so would that mean organic chemistry would count? They gave me an interview, so I wonder if they just overlooked this

Schools don't check pre-reqs until before matriculation. I would call them and see what they say.
