2017-2018 University of Texas - Houston (McGovern)

How were your UT Southwestern interviews and the day itself?
It was a great visit. Longer than necessary, but appreciated the interview coordinators' effort to share UTSW's facilities and values. Best part of the interview was constant access to both M4s (the bulk of the tour guides) and M1s (most recently experienced the decision of choosing UTSW v recently).

They grade on a linear scale of how many centimeters long and wide your smile is on average during the entire time in their office.

But really, I asked and the only response I got was they write up a summary, whatever that means...

does anyone know how many people McGovern usually interviews and how many they accept?

The acceptance rate I have no idea but they interview ~1000 people for ~240 spots.

From what I have heard, Mcgovern is match heavy and low on prematches. ~30 students prematch. Hard to say but I would guess the above poster is correct and they would match/accept interviewees they rank ~500 and above.

I’m relatively new to this site...When y’all say “you’re complete” does that mean your TMDSAS was transmitted by then?

Complete meaning the school has received and processed all the necessary materials to begin to review your application, pre-interview invite. For most schools, this is when they've received and processed your secondary application and letter recs, but since McGovern has no secondary, usually people mean when you get the confirmation email that your primary was received by them.

Yes....it means when did the med school have everything from you hat they needed! Like TMDSAS primary, secondary, MCAT scores, etc

Thank you guys!!

II today around ~noon. I got the "application received" email on August 22nd. TMDSAS transmitted Aug 18. LM ~66. URM. I'm actually pleasantly shocked I got an interview. It is a dream school but I felt it was out of my reach. Super grateful! Good luck everyone! 🙂

For those who've interviewed, what did y'all think, other than the chocolate cake?

Has anyone stayed with a host student here?

I stayed with a student host, who let me crash on their couch in the private living space area. Some students have 2 bedrooms, others have a couch or living space with an extra mattress. The student rode with me my interview and made sure I found where I needed to check in. I recommend it!

Awesome, thank you!

Unpopular opinion: the cake was average
In all seriousness, A&M had better dessert than McGovern when I interviewed.

I'm an MS3 at McGovern - if anyone has any questions other than about the new curriculum (sorry no help here), feel free to reach out! I should be good for clinical rotation and TMC stuff.

This is correct

Given that the TMC is saturated with many medical students and students of other healthcare fields, do you truly have a lot of access to clinical opportunities?

The crazy thing about the TMC is how insanely large it is. Trust me, there is enough clinical spots for everyone. Maybe not at the big hospitals. You cant really have more than lets say 2 schools rotating at Hermann or Ben Taub or Methodist. But if you wanted other clinical opportunities not related to your school's normal rotations, there's like 50 other hospitals in the TMC. Also a ton of research opportunities. I have friends that go to school at Rice which is located opposite the TMC, and virtually every premed there finds a research opportunity if they want one because there are more labs that need help than people that want to help.

Yes, the TMC is really large and there is room for all of us. At any one time, we will have McGovern, Baylor, A&M, and Cornell students rotating through the TMC (A&M and Cornell are at Methodist).

Also, our county hospital is about ~15 minutes away from the TMC (which means parking is very cheap) and only McGovern rotates there. Also, some rotations are at St. Joseph's Medical Center in downtown and MD Anderson. MD Anderson is really huge and can take on a ton of students. So despite the fact that our main teaching hospital is in the TMC (Hermann), we have other hospitals in Houston we are rotating at. I personally love not being in the actual TMC for rotations because you get either free or much cheaper parking. My experience so far is that our clinical experience is pretty great (not that I have anything else to compare it to) and we get plenty of patient exposure.

Can anyone confirm the change to a P/F grading scale?

Can anyone confirm the change to a P/F grading scale?
Can only confirm that during student panels, the MS(1s-4s) mentioned that P/F will take effect for incoming class.

Could not definitively confirm with faculty or Admissions staff.

I heard the students on the panel only confirm that the first half of MS1 year will be pass/ fail. They expressed that they didn't think it would be all of pre-clinical

Considering that I'm allergic to chocolate, I will totally share my cake if I get an interview here.

Congrats to the OOS acceptances!! I would do many things, some of them illegal, to be your future classmate. Would you mind sharing stats?

Edit: unless you end up going somewhere else (then I would gladly take your spot :ninja:)!
