2019-2020 Stony Brook

I wouldn't take much stock in what they say. Doesn't seem like everyone on their admissions team is on the same page with what they tell students.

I called today and they said that the wait list and high priority wait list were the same thing

That definitely is odd and they need to make that clearer if it’s true! Because in the email they describe the way the HPWL would work when they start pulling people off. If they really are the same thing, that gives false hope to students given that designation.

Yeah, it also wouldn't make sense if it was the same thing, because creating a separate email and sending it out to only some WL people is just extra work for them if in the end it is all the same list.

I don't think it's actually the same thing as above post said. That would make zero sense. I hope they're not telling us it's the same just so we won't withdraw from the waitlist. That or different people are sending the waitlist emails and someone decided to just add the high priority designation. Any way you cut it, not a good look.

Yup. If their plan was to keep people from withdrawing from the normal waitlist, it’s not going to work because that’s my plan now.

Not to sound naive, but, is it even allowed for them to make a new designation in their wait-list halfway through the cycle, without informing all of the interviewees from earlier in the cycle? The normal wait-list email said around 30% of students who are on the WL have been given admission in previous years, which I guess is somewhat promising but still, the addition of the HPWL apparently wound affect those numbers no?

I was put on the normal waitlist and that statistic was not included anywhere. When did you receive your normal waitlist email?

It’s in the email that comes after you respond to be placed on it.

Any current students on here available to answer some questions? Thanks in advance!

Just got A via email!!!
OOS, interviewed 12/18. I was NOT expecting this because I was very sure I really blew my interview???? Maybe only blew it a little???

I was told that they would still be pulling people off the regular wait list because of how small the HPWL is.
I interpreted this to mean that based on their projections, everyone on the HPWL would basically be offered an acceptance once movement starts. Congrats to everyone who was ranked that high!

Called them up. HPWL is almost definitely an acceptance, they said they typically clear the list entirely and then some. Wait list sees some movement as well. "many" students from the regular waitlist are offered acceptance. I also got that 30% statistic (30% of students are accepted from the wait list) but I'm not sure if that includes those on the HPWL. Anyway, it's hope for all waitlisted students! Updates and letters of intent are accepted. I'll check back in May with them lol

Hi, I have an Interview here in Feb. Can anyone who has interviewed or is currently attending tell me what they like or dislike about this school? I’m trying to figure out whether to go or not.

You go girl! Any interview tips?

Thanks! Honestly, I don’t have any unique advice. Just make sure you know exactly why you want to attend that school and sell it really well, and know your application and essays inside out, if there are a couple of points you want to make sure you touch on, make sure you steer the conversation that way. Also, the 10-15 years down the line question is very common. Make sure you have a really good answer for what you see yourself doing as a physician (Not necessarily specialty, but like extracurricular stuff like medical education, academic medicine, research, being a community physician, etc) and long term goals
