2019-2020 Tufts

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hopefully this means they're sending out II within the next day or two and that's why the portal got messed up lol
I logged into my portal and it now says that I'm not AMCAS verified and my secondary app is not ready for review? I definitely am. Hoping it's just a system error. Yikes.

well looks like it's back for me, maybe recheck?

Does anyone have a green check mark by their LOR but it doesn't appear in the document status? Or had anyone's overall status changed from ready?

To anyone applying to the Maine track, did you use the full 3000 character limit on your responses? I'm barely hitting half and I'm a tad concerned lol

I found the limit long too, especially for the "ties to Maine" section. I would definitely prioritize writing a clear concise answer over hitting an arbitrary character count.

For this Q, do people use it as a Why Tufts? : Do you wish to include any comments (in addition to those already provided in your AMCAS application) to the Admissions Committee at Tufts University School of Medicine?
Yep, that’s what I did.

I personally left it blank. I feel like you should only do why Tufts if you have a very strong, compelling reason.

How long were your Plans for the Year essays? Did you guys write paragraphs or use bullet points?

Username checks out

Just write until you’ve amply explained what you’re doing.

I, and I’m sure most, would say to use paragraphs. Bullets may come across as lazy.

Edit: I’m not trying to be demeaning in any way. More jokingly 🙂

Good luck everyone! Hopefully interviews soon? 🙂
I get sad every time I think about Tufts before I realize I always confuse it with Wake Forest lol. WF has already started given out IIs, and Tufts is one of my top schools. Still only early August, so hopefully soon 🙂

So I got a secondary from Tufts before my primary was even verified, is that normal?

Do you think this would be okay to submit for the diversity essay? I just had a bunch of different topics to consider and I've gotten the best feedback from this one. Also, it fits nicely in the character limit.

I do consider myself to be a person who would contribute to the student body. Last summer, I discovered that my twin sister and I were conceived via an anonymous sperm donor. While I was intrigued, my sister was extremely hurt regarding this information being concealed from us. My sister chose to pretend she never found out. My dad was unaware that we knew he was not our biological father, and I felt it was too taboo to talk about it openly with my family. The situation required me to be aware of others’ needs and feelings so I could understand how to respectfully broach the subject with different family members. Situations like these make me uniquely prepared for making behavioral adjustments and exhibiting sensitivity in difficult situations, which will be important social skills for me as a successful physician.
I don’t think the first sentence is necessary, as you already checked yes! I would replace that with maybe another sentence of analysis or something else you want to add

Anyone heard any updated on interviews yet? I was complete on 8/7 so I know I am being way too neurotic but so many other schools have started sending out invites. Has anyone gotten any II?

I have not 🙁

You’re being neurotic

But we all are lol. Just because other schools are sending out IIs doesn’t necessarily mean all are (and I’m trying to say this as non-condescendingly as possible). And just because others complete later than you have received IIs, doesn’t mean you have been passed up or gotten a silent R.

Really nothing we can do at this point but play the waiting game. Just gotta be patient! 🙂

This waiting game has been the worst part of this all! I'm glad we have each other though. 😆

It takes time. I was complete in late July when I applied and didn't get an II until November. We get over 10k applications, with the majority front loaded. It takes time to look at each. Unless you get a rejection, you're still in consideration..... Although they tend to do en masse rejections. It's worse than the Red Wedding.

I like your content. I would advice changing a few things.

1. You should let the activities speak for themselves. Selling yourself is a major negative(many sources out there to support this)

2. Remove “make me uniquely prepared”. It implies you think you’re better than other candidates. I don’t think that was what you intended but its still a red flag nonetheless.

3. You have a really unique story. I think you takeaway sentences should discuss something deeper than social skills. You want to highlight aspects of your personality. You’re talking about your non biological father here. Talk about the internal struggle of finding this out and what decision you can to regarding it. And why you came to that decision. For example talking about how had a hard time deciding whether you viewed him as a father and what insights, realizations, feelings, motivations, desires etc. led you to make your final decision.

This is how you’ll let your activities speak for themselves. Medical schools consider many competencies, both technical and emotional. Everyone is going to talk about their technical competencies because they’re easier to backup with extra curricular experiences. You have the opportunity to talk about an emotional competency through telling a story. Never say “me having to do this shows that I have X competency)”. Let the admission committee be the judge of that. Your job is to simply tell what happened. What you did? Why you did it? What you learned?

What do you mean by "frontloaded"

The majority of applicants apply early... Just use this thread as example, how many of you were verified or submitted apps early and around the same time? Most other applicants did too. That means it takes the AdCom awhile to get through apps even if you submitted on the earlier end

Thanks for the clarification! Another question, how diverse would you consider the Tufts SOM student body?

I'm not sure I understand the question. But we literally have a whole diversity mission - Title
Thank you for the link. I was only asking since I heard through the grapevine that elements of the app (like the diversity essay) are not weighed heavily because Tufts' class is not as diverse as advertised. I was asking about diversity from both career aspiration and ethnic standpoints.

Is the portal down for anyone else as well? Wanted to submit tonight but apparently I can't..
