Got a request for an IA letter... is this a positive sign or did they just finally get to my application?

I got that email at the end of August, haven't heard anything since then. I think it's an administrative task separate from the admissions decision-making process.

IA letter?

"Thank you for applying to Tufts University School of Medicine. In reviewing your application, we have noted an Institutional Action that took place during your college career. In order for your application process to continue, it is our standing policy to request an official explanation of such action from the college or university.

Please ask an appropriate official at your school to provide, on institutional letterhead, a written statement pertaining to this institutional action."

I got that request and then got an interview about two weeks later. Maybe it’s a good sign that they are considering you seriously?

EDIT: I also got the II before Tufts got the letter from my school, so it really is true that it won’t prevent you from getting an interview

Did you actually have an IA?

Did you actually have an IA?
Haha yes. I think a decent number of people applying have one. Certain IAs are much worse than others, academic dishonesty might be enough to kill an application. Mine is related to my poor overall academic performance as an undergraduate student, I had a 2.8 overall GPA as an undergraduate. My hope is that my MCAT and post-bac performance (+ time passed since I graduated) will be enough to overcome previous poor performance. I don't have any IIs yet, but I haven't been rejected from Tufts so I guess that's a decent sign 😛

Thanks for the explanation. I was just curious if all applicants receive the email. I'm sure your II's will be coming soon, especially with that MCAT score! I wish you the best of luck and positive vibes this cycle. :luck:

Man I'm so glad I read this thread. I haven't received this email yet but I'm calling my school tmmrw to get that letter prepped and ready! Us IA applicants gotta stick together! Lol

I agree it's probably good to have, but here's more from the email:

We would like to receive this documentation within one month from the date of this email.

If you have been invited to interview with us, please schedule and attend your interview as usual. This request for additional documentation will not delay your eligibility to be invited for an interview or affect any current interview invitations.

This is most likely an administrative task performed for all applications and probably doesn't have any bearing on admissions committee review, they just want to make sure your IA explanation is consistent with your school's. They give you a month to get this together, so I wouldn't stress too much about it 🙂

I have an IA, was complete with Tufts the first week of July and have yet to receive this email....should I call them?

I think it probably won't hurt, but I'm not sure it will accomplish anything either. Feel free to do so if it would make you feel better!

I think it means they finally got to your application. I received that email and then an II a couple of weeks later with an email acknowledging that they received my IA letter. Although I will admit it was a letter from my school saying I didnt have an IA...I was too transparent on my primary lol

Same! Apparently the IA I reported wasn’t an official IA, so there’s no record of it at my institution. *facepalm*

Does anyone know if they offer option to stay the night before the interview with a current student? Also, I am having a hard time finding any information about the program besides the website (Title) which only has a couple paragraphs about it. Do students in the program complete their whole first 2 years at the Tufts campus and then do rotations in Maine, or do they stay in Maine the first 2 years and watch lectures remotely?

I also had a hard time finding more info about the Maine Track. I recommend All Access: Med School Admissions Podcast. There is an episode with a Tufts representative and some additional info is given about the Maine Track. I believe this year they are starting to do 1 year in Boston and then 3 years in Maine.

feels like interview invites have been slow. nothing posted here for awhile.

for most schools, applications are very front-loaded (i.e., bulk of processing happens pre-october) so naturally you'll see more activity of II posts on SDN during the earlier months because, generally speaking, the average SDN user submits very early.

if you go through last year's threads, you'll see a similar trend of II activity "going down".

tldr: SDN is biased

Also I feel like with some people, if they get a lot of IIs, are less inclined to post about it later on in the cycle when the novelty has worn off

+1

i also dont really feel the need to post on a thread when there are others posting interview invites because i think my post really serves no purpose. i personally only post when it gives people insight (i.e., lack of other posts, unique factors (OOS in a traditionally IS-favored school)

I’m pretty sure Maine students don’t do anything different until clinical rotations

for maine track interview folks, where are you flying in/staying? i know travel in maine can be complicated, especially during the winter

Flying in to Portland would be most convenient. Sometimes flights to Portland can be slightly more expensive than Boston Logan. There are bus options from Logan up to Portland. I'm from Maine so I'm staying at home, about 45 minutes north of Portland, and driving to the interview the next morning. I recommend staying right in Portland though. There are quite a few hotels to choose from and I'm guessing Uber or the equivalent should get you to MMC fairly easily.

I'd love to hear what you think of the program and interview experience in general. Good luck!
Thank you! I'm getting excited/nervous! I will try to remember to respond next weekend and share my experience and my thoughts!

Is it too late to send application to Tufts?

What date? Did you post on the Interview Tracker?

It's scheduled for January 3, but there was still an option for December 20 as well. I posted in the Interview Tracker, but I'm not sure I filled the "In state?" column correctly as I'm from Maine.

I'm not interviewing for the Maine track, but for Boston they do not offer the option to stay the night before with a current student. They have an 'accomondations' page with the name of a bunch of hotels in the area.

Complete 7/28, should I just give up hope at this point?
Yeah, I assume it’s over for all July applicants if they haven’t heard back yet, maybe even the early August ones! Only the people who applied late August or later should expect to hear back at this point.

Edit: this comment is for entertainment purposes only and contains no shred of factual evidence.

Are you being sarcastic? Schools don't go in chronological order fyi. so unless you have been rejected, you are still under review.
