2020-2021 Tulane

Neurotic moment of the day given this information here
In previous cycles, people were often complete the next day or a couple days after submitting the secondary in early July so there seems to be a constant review of applications. However, notifications of rejections (and likely subsequent holds/IIs) are strived to be completed within 3-5 weeks of the completion date (and appears to typically stay on schedule early on).

The first noticed under review/complete here was on 7/24 (about 2 weeks after applications were transferred to Tulane so Tulane had waited 2 weeks before beginning to review applications). Based on this 3-5 week window and the fact that we are now entering week 4 on Friday 8/21, we should (hopefully) be hearing back either this week or next when it's week 5 (due to COVID delays).

Or maybe I'm just having wishful thinking that we'll here back soon.

Lol at the end of July to early August I was actually trying to figure out timelines and stuff based on past years

But now that it’s gotten into late august and a lot of places still haven’t sent stuff I’ve given up on attempting to predict

With the 2 week delay to transmission + general Covid delays it’s a shot in the dark

I realize this has been asked about a few times here, so I apologize for repeating:
I submitted the secondary on 7/25. Never got a complete email. Should I reach out to them?

If your status says complete on the portal, I would not worry about it.

Gotcha. So having the In Progress note next to the red exclamation mark means I'm not yet complete, right?

@fishberry If your application is complete and has not been reviewed, it should look like this. 🙂

yep, you're not complete/under review. They seem to be slowly getting through people and right now at 7/23 for review

I just wanted to let you know that I got a complete and under review email today and I submitted my secondary on 8/08

Does anyone know if they have started to send out interviews? I got an email that I was under review about a week ago!

They have not yet, which is odd because last year they sent them as early as July 11th and we are 10 days out from what is supposed to be the first interview.

They're definitely delayed due to COVID so I'm not surprised they're running later with interviews compared to last year. Did they post the interview dates online somewhere?

It's incredible that this thread is already 11 pages long without any interview invites. This has to be some kind of record
I just find it interesting that Tulane is usually one of the first out of a lot of medical schools when it comes to sending out a wave of IIs, but this year we got nada lol. I get that there is COVID, but Tulane seems more delayed than a lot of other schools. I do think I remember Louisiana being hit extremely hard though?

Yes, Louisiana and New Orleans in particular had a huge surge of cases early in the pandemic

I think this is why.

As another example, USC Keck is also super well known for being early / fastest turnaround with their II’s but they’re also way behind other schools this year. I think it’s because they are connected to the big county hospital in LA, where there is a huge amount of COVID cases.

Does anyone know if this school is still sending out secondaries? I finally got verified a couple days back which I know might be late for this school 🙁

Yes, they are still sending out secondaries but expect a 2-3 week delay in receiving one from the date your application was verified and transmitted. They seem to be sending out secondaries in batches to help space out applications for internal processing and review.

They are still reviewing those who submitted in July. The latest in the thread is 07/23 and it seems chronological

It seems like they might not be reviewing in chronological order anymore based on @sos-sos's response. But could just be an isolated occurrence, too.

My guess is that it's still chronological, but in groups. They were probably near the end of one group.

yea interesting how no one heard back from them yet considering they are usually one of the first schools that send II's out and like everyone usually stresses turning in this particular secondary quickly lol

I'm not too sure about this. I received a secondary the day I was verified, but I am a reapplicant if that affects things. Last year I submitted back in early August and moved from to complete and under review to interview in about 10 days. I expect that not to happen this cycle. Sort of a dice roll.

doesnt seem like theyre going in any particular order for "under review" someone above was marked under review even though app was submitted on 8/9

Makes sense. I am re-applicant but applied very late cycle (beginning of Sept I believe). Retook MCAT in Sept and was not "complete," until October if that.

But despite the odds, I was still fortunate to land an interview for January, which resulted in WL in March. So this year I had to ensure I applied the day my app got verified (August 12th).

Best of luck everyone, stay patient!

Hope it works out for you this year!! Way to go getting it in earlier.

I know this is incredibly neurotic since I just submitted today, but I was wondering if it was normal to have the letters of recommendation status as red/incomplete even though it shows that they have received the letters. I don't have a committee letter at my school so I sent 3 individual letters.

Don't worry, same thing happened to me. My letters were in well before I applied but were still incomplete in their portal.

For the leadership positions Q, are y'all listing being a TA (if you were one)? I ask because the question seems to restrict us to "clubs or organizations," and technically being a TA is for the course/university. Thoughts?

I did not list TA experience as a leadership position. Your TA experience may have been different than mine, but if I was asked about how TA’ing helped me develop as a leader I would have to kinda talk around it and make it fit... so I just decided not to use it as leadership

I also was verified last week and have not received a secondary (OOS applicant). From earlier posts in this thread, it seems to take a few weeks for them to send out secondaries. They must send them out in batches versus their system automatically sending them out once they receive a verified AMCAS app.
I’m in the same boat 🙁

Yeahhh, I was on the fence. I have others I can list but had enough room to squeeze in the TA if it worked. I don't want to seem like I'm fluffing though, ya know? So might just be best to keep it out (since TA is already listed on AMCAS anyways). Thanks for your thoughts!

In my case I listed it as I was heavily involved with students and working with them. I guess it depends but honestly I’d list it no matter what. It’s leadership.

Again, I think it depends on your specific responsibilities. I was going to list it initially but I took a step back and tried to remind myself that it’s already discussed in depth elsewhere in my app so I don’t necessarily need to rehash it (especially if it’s kind of a stretch, as it was in my case)

I listed it.

Did you guys just list the leadership positions or did you also provide a brief description (when needed)?

looking for some advice. would it be weird to discuss how I've experienced NOLA during a festival I attended? I want to tie it into interest for the location but I'm wondering how it might be perceived that I didn't visit the school while I was there (I actually tried but it didn't work out). trying my hardest to avoid overlap with my responses to the other questions. I've seen people use sports teams but not sure about a festival. thoughts?

I wouldn’t because of the stigma of a festival. Just say you visited the city.

edit: I wrote this specifically with buku/voodoo in mind

haha, that would certainly not go over well. the festival I went to is actually pretty community oriented with a very positive message and philanthropic ties to the city but it is still a music festival at the end of the day so I'll take your advice and keep it generic. thx for your feedback!
