2019-2020 Massachusetts

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I just got my residency switched up on my very last minute (long story, thought I was solid as a resident in my home state, but turns out that isn't the case and I'm actually one in MA, as a very recent transplant). With a LizzyM of 69 and a weakness factor of GPA.. would it be worth throwing an application this late in the pile? How quick is the secondary/completion turnaround? What is more enticing to this school - residency or superstar stats?
You're not late in the MD cycle. UMASS med, from what I've heard as a Mass resident, really likes MA/regional applicants ( New England). If you're beyond that, I wouldn't call it worth it. If you're a superstar you have a bigger chance elsewhere. Just my opinion.

Does anyone know if, ofc once you are accepted to both PURCH and MD, you choose between PURCH and the regular MD Program? Or does applying to PURCH lock you in if you are accepted there?

Does anyone know if we applied to both regular MD and PURCH, and ofc if we are accepted, we choose between PURCH and regular MD track?

Can I get accepted at UMMS if I'm not accepted in PURCH?
Yes! If our UMMS–Baystate Admissions Committee determines an applicant is a viable medical school candidate but is not a good fit for PURCH—or an applicant opts out of the PURCH track admissions process—the applicant is assigned to a UMass Admissions team for review. His or her application is not affected negatively as a consequence.

EDIT: just realized that didn't really answer your question. This one's closer:

Am I able to switch back to regular MD track curriculum at any point?
You may request to opt in to or out of the PURCH program throughout your first year with the approval of your learning community mentor and leadership at both campuses. See PURCH Track Policies

I think you should apply to the program you want to go to. If you don't want to do PURCH, you shouldn't apply.

No sorry, please see post again. I'm not wondering if you can get accepted unto UMMS not PURCH

Updated my post but see here:

Opting-out prior to matriculation:
~ An applicant who has not yet been accepted into the SOM may elect to opt out of the PURCH Track after the interview/visit to UMMS and Baystate and still be considered a candidate for SOM admission. The applicant must contact the SOM Admission Office ([email protected] or 508-856-2323) to request this change in application status within 10 days of their PURCH Track interview. The applicant must state the reason(s) for the request in writing to the SOM Admissions Office.
~ An applicant who has already been accepted to the PURCH Track may later request to opt out of PURCH prior to matriculation and still remain in the SOM. The applicant must make the request and the reason(s) for the request in writing to the SOM Admissions Office ([email protected] or 508-856-2323). Decisions to grant such a request are made after discussions with the SOM- Baystate Admissions Subcommittee.

Thanks! I've already applied and have II's to both. For recent family reasons i'd prefer to be in worcester if I'm lucky enough to end up in mass

That makes sense. The obvious question you should be thinking about is why you applied to PURCH in the first place if you really prefer Worcester, I think it can be explained fairly easily if you attend the interview and decide that the program doesn't align with your goals or whatever. Good luck with your interviews!

Oh no yeah no decisions now - I really like the PURCH curriculum, I'm just trying to tentatively try to weigh things. Thank you for the help 🙂

MD/PhD applicant here-- anyone else finding the online portal is down? Just started happening today.

when i got the II email they told me which date to come in - i wasn't able to choose a date. is this normal? thanks!

Would anybody be willing to look over my UMASS secondary? It's a long one, and I wanna make sure it's good...

Received the two interview invites last week for UMass MD and for PURCH, OOS applicant, secondary submitted the first week of August.

For all you OOS with II, how far in advance did UMass schedule your interview?

UConn sent an interview invite yesterday for this coming Sunday, 5 days notice... I don't know why they make it so short :/

5 days!? What if you have a gap year job and need advanced notice before taking a day off? the heck?!

Any instate applicants still waiting? seen a lot of OOS II and not as many IS, although that might just be SDN sampling bias?

I'm not sure if this is the case w UMass but I know some schools who have less than ideal winters tend to send more OOS invites first so that travel doesn't become as much of an issue come the winter months

Popping in as an in-state applicant. Submitted my secondary earlier this week. It seems like UMass is having a pretty quick turnaround! Surprised that there has already been a rejection. Here's hoping that this all means I hear back soon.

might take a while, might not. I've been sitting complete since July 15th but I know some people heard back in just a week

I just received an email from Umass saying that I had been verified for instate tuition. Have any of the other IS applicants received an email like this?

My complete date is 7/31/19

yeah i got that shortly after I was complete.

Yes I'm IS and love UMass, around/slightly above their stats too. SDN does seem to be more OOS II's though it's always difficult to tell. One can hope IS will hear more soon!

Hey y'all. I'm a fourth year med student at UMass, happy to answer any questions about the school if anyone has them! I used SDN pretty religiously during my application cycle forever ago, so it's only fair to pay it back. Feel free to message me!
Hey, I was wondering on the curriculum structure because I couldn't really find a definitive answer. Is it primary lecture based, TBL, or a combo of both?

Anyone else feel free to chime in if you know

Edit: Also bonus if you can inform me on some of the opportunities for student community outreach 🙂

I might be able to answer the question about student community outreach. Could you be more specific? I can say that there are more opportunities at UMass Medical for students than I had at my undergrad school. There is absolutely something for everyone.

Has anyone taken a long time to received a secondary? I applied a while ago but I have not gotten one emailed. Anyone have any insight? Feeling hopeless 🙁

When did you apply? My primary got verified 8/22 and I got the secondary 8/27. So not right away but definitely not that long! I am IS but I don't think that would have a huge impact since they don't screen out applicants before secondaries. If it's been over 2 weeks you should definitely contact the school!

Hi everyone,
I am OOS. They emailed me today regarding additional info I needed to enter regarding residency information and reopened my application so that I can enter them in.
Does this mean anything (aka not a straight reject)? haha...

Hi Engrailed,
It doesn't mean anything beyond what they are saying. The information regarding your residency is needed so you are accurately categorized in the system. I am a MA resident, and once my application was in and processed, I received a confirmation email from UMass stating that I qualified as an in-state applicant. My guess is that an OOS applicant would get a confirmation email stating as much. I think it primarily matters for both the school and you to know what your tuition rate will be. Good luck!

Has anyone had their MMI yet? If you have, would you say it was a stressful one compared to other MMIs, or could the questions be anticipated beforehand?
