Are there any current students who could provide insight into how Downstate Medical Center closing will impact rotations and the overall education? Also, I spoke with an adcoms member elsewhere who said that the closure will likely affect Downstate’s accreditation status, is this an actual concern? Thanks
I want to preface this by saying that I’m a preclinical student and these are only my views from speaking with classmates, admin, and scouring the web. While my thoughts might not be reality, I’d like to think it’s close. Also the proposal isn’t solidified and everything I talk about can change tomorrow. If any other current students, especially upperclassmen have anything to add or disagree, please speak up!
I think the effects of this proposal will not have a large effect on students. First, it’s a proposal and nothing is set in stone yet. Apparently the state has been trying to shut downstate down for ever, because, well, the majority of our patients are un/under insured and the whole purpose of healthcare is to maximize profit /s. While this places downstate HOSPITAL (not university) in forever jeopardy, it does increase the quality of your education, but that’s not the point of this post. Also the proposal is to reduce inpatient care and transfer those specialist services to kings county. They do want to expand primary care services.
So what happens if the proposal does actually go through? Well first, downstate holds ~130 inpatient beds, kings county 600+, Maimonides 700 beds. And we are the only medical school for a borough of 2.6 million residents. If downstate shuts down, you’re not getting shipped to Jersey or somewhere far away for rotations.
As for residency, this is the biggest uncertainty. Lots of downstate students match at downstate residencies. With the few and brief conversations I’ve had with residents, they don’t seem too concerned although do they really have the time and brain power to be worried about this? That being said, kings county is run by downstate residents. As talked about earlier, kings county beds outnumber downstate beds by a large margin so there will still be a lot of patients needing care by downstate residents. Maybe a closure of downstate would see a small reduction in downstate residency positions? Not sure if this applies to some of the more niche specialities.
So obviously this proposal isn’t a good thing and you should definitely consider it when making your decision. However, it should be a small consideration. I still think cost/location/curriculum is more important than this proposal. Obviously I wouldn’t turn down an NYU A for downstate but imo I would still choose downstate over any similarly ranked schools.
Oh and also idk about accreditation. It’s incredibly complicated and I don’t think anyone here is well versed enough in the politics of it all to make an informed opinion. There’s tons of medical schools that are accredited without a home hospital yet you can loose accreditation for not having enough lockers for your students so… 🤷🏽♂️
Happy to expand on any of my points or answer any questions
