2019-2020 Tufts

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know which tax documents from our parents/us we need to send to Tufts for the financial aid application? It says all tax statements and W-2's but that together is like a 70-page packet of papers. This is the documents they requested along with the scholarship information sheet thats printable on their website

I'm very happy to be accepted into TUFTS class of 2024. I received an email requesting a response on this form, with a very near deadline (2 weeks). I know this is not the same as "Commit To Enroll," but if I answer yes, will I eliminate any chances of getting further interviews or acceptances? Will they inform AMCAS that I'm done with other schools?

nope it does not! the important piece is when the AMCAS choose your school tool or whatever comes out. This is just to hold your seat. Congrats!

has anyone who interviewed brought their luggage to the interview to be stored there during the day? it says on my portal that they have a place to store it but want to make sure there haven't been any problems with it! i'm a bit neurotic and just want the day to go smoothly 🙂

yes they do and it's in a closet where you can close the door so nobody can see it!!!

Does anyone know if Tufts publishes real match lists? On their website they give the % going into each specialty but it would be great to get more details.
They also give you a 2019 match list in paper form during the interview day

Anybody know if they're sending out any more IIs? Or if anyone got one recently? I submitted my secondary early October, sent an update via the portal last week, and still haven't heard anything...

most interview days appear to be full at the moment, I’d guess somewhere less than 100 more II’s to go at this point. They interview Monday and Wednesday for the regular MD at boston campus with around 20 people per day. That’s 40 per week, and since they don’t interview during the week of deliberations, it comes to per 120 per month. Given they interview around 800 peeps total and stop interviewing mid-March, I’d say slots will only open as people cancel their current interviews (which is still happening as people shuffle around).

Update: There are March dates open as of now but it is unclear as to how many spots are available on the calendar.

I think 100 could be right, but that's probably at the top end of what they'll send. The first two weeks of March are full, and that Feb date is almost certainly a cancellation meaning it's one spot. There are two full weeks in March remaining + 1 Monday which they haven't made available for scheduling yet, so 5 possible interview dates if they decide to open all of them, and if they invite 20 people to each that's 100 more IIs. I guess it depends on whether they decide to open those last two weeks for interviews.

Nope and I don't know if that's created by students or by the school. There are some other schools on SDN who already have a thread for 2024 class....

isnt it a little early to be making these facebook groups? 😳 though i wouldnt mind starting to look for potential roommates or anything hahaha..housing in boston made me wanna vommit. but i havent seen anything yet

I heard from someone who interviewed recently that the last interview day is the Wednesday of the second week of March, which means they've already opened up all the interview days. So IIs will probably trickle in as people cancel, but if they don't open up any additional days there's unlikely to be another wave.

There are 3 days open on the calendar right now, meaning there's at least 3 spots that need to be filled, so it's not over yet!

Is Tufts admissions rolling?

For example if I can get an interview day 2 weeks before my currently scheduled interview date (Feb 10th) would this make any difference?

To my understanding, they review all interview applicants at the end of the month and release decisions early the next month. So if the earlier interview date is in January, then yes it may make a difference.

are any other accepted Maine Track students concerned about the fact that 2nd-year pre-clinical courses will now be in Maine? Seems like it might be a disadvantage having professors who are teaching for the first time/ going through a curriculum that is being implemented for the first time.

can anyone comment about the living conditions in posner hall besides whats on the tufts website? as an accepted Maine Track student it seems like living in the dorm as opposed to finding a place to live in Boston, as we are just there for one year, seems like an easier solution. Is it fairly easy to find off campus housing close to school? really don't want to move back into a dorm again tho

Also wondering. I think the dorm is probably cheaper than rent nearby, but I’m wondering how important having a car is to get to nearby hospitals.

students said cars are not necessary ms1 and ms2. once they start rotating to nearby hospitals, its convenient to have a car, but u can still get around with one.

Most students can get away with not having a car, but certain sites esp for FM during 3rd year, you will need one. Rent in Boston is what it is. Most students live walking distance from an MBTA stop but few live right around campus.

Question for a current student if there are any here:

Can you comment more about your average step 1 score? I don't see official data but on a sdn or reddit spreadsheet from an year ago it said 227. I was surprised that it was kinda low considering the amazing match list. Is that score accurate? If so any ideas why so low and also how the new curriculum may affect it?
Current MS4 here. The 227 was from the M19 class, for whatever reason they saw a drop in their class, but is not reflective of the school as a whole. That said, they still matched all 9 ortho applicants, all 4 derm (2 at mass gen), as well as all ENT, Urology, Ophtho. Also, this year’s class has matched all our Urology applicants to their first choice.

Don’t over analyze step score. But instead think about how we matched.

It is a bit less than 1,100 a month with all utilities included. All rooms are singles and are about 11'x13'. Shared bathrooms and shared kitchen space. Overall it's a great place to live and much cheaper than any other option in the area. Not to mention you can avoid the lame brokers fee that agents charge in boston. I lived on the street behind posner last year (Tyler) and paid 1,600 a month for rent and utilities. Not to mention my room was much smaller than my current one in posner.

The rooms all come pre-furnished but you can ask them to remove whatever you'd like and replace it with your own personal items. There is a professional cleaning service that takes care of the hallways and common spaces. Overall it does have a dorm vibe but its a great place to live and very convenient!

Most people here use the T for the first two years, then most do get a car for clinical rotations. You could theoretically pick all your rotations at Tufts but there are tons of other sites and some of them are about a 20-30 minute drive. Not to mention you will need to get to your site very early in the morning (especially surgery). So even if the T does go to your site, it will not be running at the time you will need to catch it to be on time.

Did any accepted student receive back ground check email yet?

you have acceptance from 3 schools. Do you get email from each school or one report distributed to all schools? Did your say that it was requested from Tufts?

There is one central service that provides background checks for schools participating in background checks through AMCAS. So it's just one email

If anyone hears about a Second Look date, please post here.

Maine Track applicants: How long after the interview did it take until hearing their decision?

I think we will be hearing back in the first week of Feb. After neurotically skimming through this thread, it seems like the committee meets the last week of each month and decisions go out the first week of the next month. Also I think we interviewed together (Jan 17) so hi 🙂

Any current students or applicants know if there is any possibility of switching into the MD/PhD program after MS1 or MS2? Does this happen?

Basically you can apply in after your second or third year (after Step 1) if you perform well and do enough research. I don't think it's easy to do this, but it is an option available to students.
